Compact, convenient and capable — meet the 4-1/2" circular saw that works hard.
A 4-1/2″ compact cordless circular saw can be very useful both in the workshop and around the home. The smaller saw is lightweight, easy to handle, and ideal for cutting sheet goods, trimming stock, or working in tight spaces. It’s convenient for small woodworking projects such as boxes, small furniture pieces, and other light-duty tasks. Because it’s compact and less powerful, it’s also easier to control and less fatiguing to use over long periods.
However, the 4-1/2″ saw does have limitations. Its smaller blade means a shallower maximum cutting depth, making it less suitable for thicker materials or heavy hardwoods. It also tends to have less power and torque, so it can bog down during demanding cuts. Blade options for smaller saws are more limited compared to the wide variety available for 7-1/4″ models.
For a hobbyist woodworker, craft makers, and DIYer who undertake minor repairs and upgrades around the home, a smaller 4-1/2″ saw is a good choice for quick, light cuts and easy portability.
Let’s have a look at what the new Kreg 20V Ionic Drive 4-1/2″ circular saw has on offer.

The Kreg 20V Ionic Drive 4-1/2″ circular saw is driven by Kreg’s Ionic Drive brushless motor and spins the included 4-1/2″ SureCut 36-tooth fine-finishing blade at up to 5,000 RPM, which gives it the torque needed for accurate trim and panel work while keeping the overall tool lightweight. It’s powered by the same 20-volt “Blue Ion” lithium battery that runs the rest of Kreg’s growing tool lineup, paired with a high-efficiency brushless motor for consistent power and longer runtime.
At 5-3/4 pounds it’s almost half the weight of a typical 7-1/4″ circ saw, an even noticeably lighter than a 6-1/2″ saw. This makes the saw much easier to use one-handed, while it’s compact size enables it to fits better in tight places.
The saw has a maximum cutting capacity of 1-11/16″ at 90°, and 1-1/16″ at a 45° bevel — I find this well suited to crosscutting and trimming plywood, trim, and most 2x dimensional lumber in a single pass.
I found it quick and easy to make blade height and bevel angle adjustments, thanks to large, easy-to-grasp adjustment knobs. Once tightened everything stays firmly in place. There is a small screw on the side of the bevel adjuster that lets you set the blade exactly at 90° to the base.
With a 2Ah battery installed I was able to rip just under 140 linear feet of 3/4″ ply on a single charge. Results will vary, of course, depending on the type and ply used.
The saw includes several thoughtful features — a soft-start motor to reduce kickback on startup, an electronic blade brake for faster stops, clear depth indicators for quick adjustments, an auxiliary front handle for two-handed control, and an integrated 1-1/4″ vacuum port to help contain dust when connected to a shop vac.
I was pleased to see that Kreg ships the saw with a fine-tooth finishing blade that produces smoother edges than a coarse construction blade. In tandem with the brushless motor I find that the 36-tooth blade helps reduce tear-out and the need for significant secondary sanding on face cuts. The saw accepts any brand of 4-1/2″ blade that has a 3/8″ arbor hole.
As you’ll find on many saw, the stamped depth and bevel scales are difficult to read. The saw does have on-board storage for the hex key that’s used for blade replacement. Kreg doesn’t include a rip fence, which I don’t mind as I prefer to use an edge guide when making long cuts where accuracy matters. However, an optional Kreg fence (KMA2400) is available.
In use, the Ionic Drive 4-1/2″ feels noticeably lighter and more nimble than a full-size 7-1/4″ saw, which makes it easier to control for short crosscuts, bevels, and working near finished surfaces; that smaller footprint also helps when working inside cabinets or on ladders.
While you do get a shallower cutting depth which limits the saw’s ability to slice through very thick stock this isn’t much of an issue for anyone who works primarily with sheet goods and 3/4″ solid wood (though the saw can handle stock up to 1-11/16″ thick).
The saw’s electronic systems — soft start, electric brake, and brushless motor management — help preserve battery life and improve user safety, and the included LED improves cutline visibility in lower light conditions. For absolute precision on long rip cuts I use a fence.
Build quality and ergonomics are top notch, which makes this saw ideal for those who value control and finish quality rather than raw ripping power.
Overall, the Kreg 20V Ionic Drive 4-1/2″ circular saw delivers a compelling mix of precision features, dust control (when connected to a dust extractor or shop vac) and compact handling. For hobbyists and small-shop woodworkers, it’s an attractive option when portability, clean cuts, and tool ergonomics are priorities, and it excels at trimming, crosscutting, beveling, and working with plywood and finish materials.
